The United Nations announced two senior appointments at a press briefing. The Secretary‑General has appointed James Swan of the United States as his new special representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and head of the UN peacekeeping mission (MANUSCO); Mr. Swan succeeds Bintuketa of Guinea.
The spokesperson noted Swan’s lengthy diplomatic career, including service as the special representative and head of the UN mission in Somalia and multiple U.S. government assignments in Africa.
In a separate appointment, Major General Jun Hui Wu of China was named the new force commander of the UN mission in South Sudan, succeeding Lieutenant General Subramanyan. The briefing said Major General Wu brings 40 years of leadership and operational experience in the People’s Liberation Army and in UN peacekeeping, and most recently served as military attaché at the Chinese embassy in Germany.
The spokesperson congratulated both appointees and thanked their predecessors for their service. No effective dates for the postings were provided in the briefing.
