Needham health department earns accreditation; staff report grants, new hires and public‑health programs

The Town of Needham health department announced on Feb. 27 that it has been awarded accreditation, a milestone staff described as rare for a small local department in Massachusetts. “We are now accredited,” Lynn said, adding the department will prepare the required annual report and hopes to share its procedures with other health departments in the state.

Staff updates to the Board of Health described several near‑term items: an application for two retail‑program grants (a base and an add‑on) totaling $10,000 to support FDA retail program standards and training; completion of 2025 end‑of‑year permitting and follow‑up inspections; and ongoing plan reviews for several proposed food businesses including a Boston Children’s Hospital clinic, a Twice Bakery location and a Taberna restaurant at the former rice barn site.

Sai, environmental health staff, summarized housing nuisance work including a rat complaint investigation on Elliot Road and an issued order to a property owner near the train tracks to address chronic dumpster sanitation problems. He also noted the NEM pool and racket club are updating pool filters and that the department will review installed equipment for compliance with pool code.

Public‑health program highlights included subregional substance‑use work: Lydia Cunningham described an adult social‑marketing campaign in testing, facilitator training and rollout of an I Decide alternative‑to‑suspension program now being offered across cluster towns. Karen and colleagues outlined alcohol‑policy training for student leaders, continued opioid‑settlement strategic efforts and an naloxone training that distributed no‑lockboxes to students who wanted them.

Tim told the board an estimated $48,000 upgrade is budgeted for integration between AED location data, emergency‑medical dispatch and the CAD system, but final implementation is awaiting contract resolutions between vendors and lawyer review. Julie reported influenza activity remains elevated and said a new epidemiologist starts next week and will appear at a future board meeting.

Board members praised staff work, noted plans to publicize the accreditation locally, and discussed next steps for continuing maintenance of accreditation standards and regional collaboration on environmental‑health procedures.
