Flagler County officials introduce 'File of Life' medical-information program

Flagler County Commissioner Kim Carney and community paramedics Rob Eritt and Tracy Farmer introduced the "File of Life," a program designed to give first responders ready access to residents' critical medical information during emergencies. "This initiative is called the File of Life," the presenters said.

The File of Life is a magnetic packet that contains a person's health profile and may include a Do Not Resuscitate directive if the resident chooses. "The information in a File of Life packet is crucial to paramedics at the time of an emergency," the presenters said, adding that the packet helps when a patient is unconscious or when no one at the residence knows their medical history.

Paramedics said the packet is stored on the refrigerator and is paired with a small clear sticker intended for a front door or window so crews can immediately recognize that the packet is available inside. "As we get on scene, we recognize that sticker and we know that this packet with all your information is in there," they said.

Officials recommended that all Flagler County residents participate. To request a packet, the presenters gave Flagler County Fire Rescue's phone number, (386) 313-4260, and the county webpage flaglercounty.gov/fcfr, under the link "Important Medical Documentation." They said staff will deliver the packet and provide further instruction to residents who request one.

There was no formal vote or policy action recorded during the presentation; speakers framed the appearance as an informational outreach to encourage resident participation.
