Officers of the Brookings High School HOSA chapter presented highlights to the school board, describing membership growth, community service and competitive participation.
Officers introduced themselves: Lauren Bortnham (senior, president), Brooklyn Burus (senior, secretary), Amelia Wendell (senior, reporter), Tay Hazelhorse (senior, treasurer) and Michelle Lamb (senior, vice president). Advisor Paul Biser attended with the group.
Students said the chapter had 66 members represented across grades 9–12 and reported 103% growth in membership over the school year. The chapter described community projects: a hygiene drive that collected about 2,500 items valued at more than $5,000 and distributed goods to the high‑school counseling office, United Way and the Women's and Children's Abuse Shelter; Science Saturday events averaged about 70 children per session; and three students qualified to attend the international leadership conference in Nashville.
The board praised the students for community service and for giving members early exposure to health‑career pathways. Student comments showed a range of post‑secondary plans, including nursing, dental school, pre‑med, biomedical engineering and one student planning a pre‑law track in medical malpractice law.
What happens next: The board recognized the chapter's achievements and encouraged continued community engagement and partnership with district programs.
