Council raises parking fine, tightens front‑yard rules and adopts food‑truck safety updates

The Cold Water City Council on March 9 adopted a set of public‑safety and code changes aimed at improving parking compliance and food‑truck fire safety.

Joe Shides, public safety director, described changes to the Uniform Traffic Code that would raise a long‑standing $5 parking fine to $25 because, he said, residents treat the lower amount as a routinized cost rather than a deterrent. The council adopted ordinance 881 to change the parking penalty and ordinance 882 to clarify and enforce a front‑yard parking prohibition already present in zoning.

Separately, staff proposed adopting additional NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) chapters that regulate ignition, cooking, venting and ventilation specific to food trucks. Fire and code staff described a free fire‑safety inspection program and potential civil infraction penalties for operators who fail to register or meet safety standards. The council adopted ordinances 883 and 884 to incorporate those standards and inspection processes.

City officials characterized the package as safety and quality‑of‑life improvements. Council approved each ordinance after brief discussion and motions to adopt.

Next steps: staff will update code language, implement the inspection program through the fire marshal and publish the adjusted penalty schedule and registration requirements for food‑truck operators.
