Parent asks Weisetta board to adopt plant‑based milk policy after federal rule change

During the public comment period of the March 9 Weisetta Public Schools board meeting, parent Genevie Vaverick urged the district to adopt a policy to proactively offer plant‑based milk alternatives upon student request.

Vaverick said a federal law that took effect Jan. 14, 2026 allows schools participating in the National School Lunch Program to serve plant‑based milks that are nutritionally equivalent to dairy milk without requiring a physician’s statement. She said previous rules required a doctor’s note to guarantee a substitute and that the change creates an opportunity to reduce waste and expand equitable meal access for students who do not consume dairy for dietary, cultural, religious or ethical reasons.

“Students who can't or won't eat animal products because of general health, culture, religion, ethics, or climate action deserve access to school meals, too,” Vaverick said. She cited a USDA study finding that a substantial share of milk cartons are thrown away and argued the district should create a policy to provide a plant‑based option on request.

Board members did not take immediate action on the request during the meeting; administrative staff did not present a formal policy proposal or timeline. The request was recorded as public input for the board to consider in future discussions about meal service practice and equity.
