Debate grows in Palatka over lowering the fire assessment fee as commissioners weigh budget tradeoffs

Commissioner Jones urged the Palatka commission on April 8 to lower the fire assessment fee, citing constituent hardship and the need to reduce household expense burdens.

"The fire assessment fee must be lowered," Commissioner Jones said, telling colleagues she has received repeated requests from residents. Commissioners acknowledged the fee funds public safety services and that any reduction will change the revenue baseline used to build the budget. Finance Director Miss Pierre cautioned that cutting the fee without an identified revenue replacement could create budget shortfalls and said she would be "leery" of making cuts until commissioners review modeled scenarios.

Commissioners directed staff to produce revenue projections showing current fire assessment revenue at last year’s rate, and to model lower‑rate scenarios so the commission can see the tradeoffs between revenues and department budgets. The group discussed the broader context — whether to increase other fees, reduce nonessential spending or reallocate funds — but no change to the fire assessment was approved at the workshop.

The discussion concluded with a request that staff provide clear, plain‑language examples of the fiscal impact of different assessment rates so residents can understand the outcomes before a final decision is considered.
