District outlines MTSS behavior supports, care rooms and rubric rollout

Edmond Public Schools’ MTSS (multi-tiered system of supports) team presented a detailed overview of district behavior supports, emphasizing care rooms at elementary schools, behavior interventionists, and a secondary behavior rubric designed to standardize expectations and data-driven interventions.

Elementary schools maintain care rooms — safe spaces where students can regulate emotions and work through challenges — supported by student support teams composed of principals, assistant principals, school psychologists and behavior interventionists. The MTSS team said all 19 elementary schools now have care rooms or dedicated spaces, and care rooms become Tier 2 supports when coupled with intentional interventions and skill teaching.

At the secondary level, staff described a research-based behavior rubric used for site self-reflection, data analysis, and targeted goals. The district plans to move secondary sites into year three of rubric implementation while rolling elementary sites into their first full year; district tactics include problem-solving models, standardized data-review protocols and strengthening Professional Learning Communities to apply behavior strategies at the classroom level.

Administrators credited site teams and behavior interventionists with implementation and noted partnerships such as the Oklahoma County Youth Board’s Be Strong Families curriculum to support parent cafes and family engagement. The MTSS presentation concluded with an invitation for board members to view showcase materials in the foyer.
