Edmond Public Schools approved purchases of 5,000 student Chromebooks and 1,000 teacher Chromebooks from UDT after an extended consent-agenda discussion about device longevity, repair rates and procurement choices.
Administrators said the district purchased large batches of devices during 2020–21 and has seen accelerated failures in batteries and motherboards in those units; they characterized the Dell model chosen for students as relatively rugged and noted Lenovo Chromebook Plus models targeted for teachers were selected to give teachers a larger 14-inch screen and higher performance. The technology director described a plan to normalize a replacement cycle of roughly 4,000 devices per year so that, once the COVID-era stock is retired, the district can sustain a five-year lifecycle for devices.
Board members asked about lost devices over the summer, repair-vs.-replace tradeoffs and whether subscription-based repair services could reduce replacement costs; administrators said vendor warranty and repair rates informed the campus device selection and that some grades (third and seventh noted as replacement cohorts) receive new devices to maintain cycles.
The board approved both purchases by recorded vote.
