McLeod County honors longtime Health & Human Services supervisor Donna Kraut at retirement

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners opened its April 7 meeting by honoring Donna Kraut, a Health and Human Services supervisor retiring after 33 years with the county. Employee relations director Hannah introduced the recognition, saying Kraut’s tenure and mentorship made a lasting difference to staff and residents.

Barrett Spores, McLeod County Health and Human Services director, described Kraut’s career and steady leadership, noting she began as a long-term care eligibility worker in 1992 and rose to supervisor. "She has lifted up countless members and created a work environment where people feel valued, respected, and capable even in the toughest moments," Spores said.

Kraut addressed the board and family members in the gallery, calling her time with the county "a meaningful lifetime of work and service above self," and added, "I've given greatly and now it's time to step aside and call it a career." Commissioners offered personal thanks and memories during a brief round of remarks before staff and attendees joined Kraut for photos.

The tribute concluded with applause and a group photo. No formal action beyond the recognition was required; the board then returned to regular agenda business.
