Jim Wells County Commissioners voted April 10 to amend local electioneering rules to bar electioneering on the courthouse and immediately adjacent county‑owned property at all times unless the courthouse has been designated as a polling location.
Staff told the court the change is intended to eliminate confusion that occurred when the elections office moved to the resource center and candidates placed signs near the courthouse. "People were seeing the signs out on the courthouse yard and thinking the election is here and and having to deal with that frustration of having to be turned away," a staff member said.
The amendment covers the courthouse grounds, adjacent parking lots and sidewalks that caused confusion during the last election; the resource center and other designated polling locations are unaffected when formally designated. Commissioners approved the amendment by voice vote.
Court staff said enforcement language will reference the immediate courthouse perimeter (sidewalk on Cameron Street and adjacent parking) and noted staff at the resource center will develop rules for electioneering around that site if needed.
The amendment is effective upon approval and will be enforced by elections staff and courthouse security during election periods and at other times as specified in the revised rule text.
