Board honors dozens of retirees; reports three closed-session settlements totaling about $201,600

The San Mateo-Foster City School District Board of Trustees honored dozens of retiring employees May 23, recognizing long-tenured staff across elementary and middle schools for years of service. Speakers from principals and site leaders highlighted individual careers and contributions: examples included Sharon Hasselbach (30 years), Margot Neelsen (28+ years) and multiple others from Foster City, Brewer Island, Baywood, Highlands, Northshore View and Samuel Park schools.

After the public meeting recessed to closed session, the board reconvened and reported unanimous approvals of three compromise agreements resolving potential or pending claims against the district. The first agreement authorized approximately $4,600 to fund a student's private speech and/or occupational therapy services covering 2022-23 through 2024-25. The second resolved Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) cases in exchange for $84,000 to cover educational expenses for 2023-24 and 2024-25. The third approved a compromise not to exceed $113,000 covering a student's attorney fees, educational expenses through July 24, 2024, and one district-funded independent educational evaluation.

Board minutes show each settlement was approved by a 5-0 vote. District staff characterized the settlement approvals as efforts to resolve potential or threatened claims and move forward without litigation. The retiree recognitions and photo opportunities were part of the evening's celebrations; staff and trustees thanked retirees for their decades of service and invited them for group photographs.
