Torrance Unified School District leaders told the board that Trustee Jeremy Gerson’s recent resignation — after he was sworn into the Torrance City Council — created a vacancy in Trustee Area E and that the board must act within 60 days to avoid a county‑ordered election.
Superintendent Dr Stow said the board has two options: make a provisional appointment that would last only until the December board meeting and a November special election for the remainder of the term, or take no action and risk the Los Angeles County Superintendent calling a standalone election that could cost an estimated $600,000. Staff described residency and voter‑registration requirements for any appointee and outlined a public application and interview schedule.
Trustees agreed to advertise the vacancy and assemble a small committee to review applications for eligibility. Dr Mohammad and Mr Han volunteered to serve on the committee; staff said applications would be posted and the district would schedule interviews on May 20 so that an appointee could be sworn in and participate that evening’s meeting, including closed session if necessary.
Board members emphasized outreach and office hours so potential applicants unfamiliar with the role could learn about the responsibilities. Staff also said the provisional appointment must be publicly noticed and that the county could call an election if the board fails to act by the June 10 deadline given in the county’s correspondence.
The board did not select an appointee at the meeting; it established the committee and the timetable for public notice and interviews.
