Public Works director recommends switching solid‑waste hauler to save about $90 per load

Danny Yates, director of public works, told commissioners at the April 2 work session that staff solicited three local bids for solid‑waste hauling and recommended George Container, which quoted $220 per load compared with the county’s current $310 per load.

Yates said George Container currently operates 16 trucks and 14 full‑time drivers and that, based on his analysis, the firm has the capacity to meet the county’s seven‑day service requirements. "The cheapest being George container at $220 a load and ... that's what I'm recommending where right now we're currently paying 310 so it's it's basically a $90 a load savings," he said.

Commissioners and staff discussed contract length, price increase caps and automatic renewals. The board asked that legal staff include termination of the existing vendor’s automatic renewal in the motion or contract language. Because of that addition, commissioners agreed not to place the item on consent without the attorney finalizing cancellation steps; the matter will appear on the April 14 agenda for formal action.

The exchange emphasized ensuring vendor capacity on day one and negotiating protections against large automatic price escalations in future annual renewals.
