Kim, speaking for the Friends of the Library on behalf of Aaron (the Friends' treasurer), told the board the group's first Amplify Austin fundraising effort exceeded expectations: early giving raised more than $500 and the 24-hour main event generated an additional $1,800, for net proceeds of $3,312 after platform and bank fees.
"We saw a strong outpouring of support during the early giving period, raising more than $500," Kim said. "During that 24-hour window we saw an additional $1,800 donated, bringing us to a total of $3,312; nearly all the contributors covered the platform or bank fees, so that was what we netted."
Kim described continuing Book Nook donations (cash box and QR code/PayPal) and said the Friends will promote an upcoming book sale on March 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The sale will include hats, patches, buttons and other items, with all proceeds supporting the library.
The Friends are also preparing a grant application to the Moody Foundation's educational impact fund to expand a board-books-for-babies program aimed at pre-K and early readers from families where English may not be the primary language. Kim said the application will be submitted soon but the group is early in the process and has no sense yet of the chance of success; final disposition is expected late summer.
Board members asked whether the funds raised are earmarked; Kim said proceeds will go into the Friends' general pool and library staff submit allocation requests monthly. The Friends provide program support that the library says it could not otherwise afford, including supplies and prize items for reading programs that cannot be purchased with taxpayer dollars.
The board thanked the Friends for the fundraising work and noted the Friends are preparing for their next board meeting on March 19 at 4:00 p.m. and will continue to accept program allocation requests from library staff.
