Mayor Ron Williams asked town staff on April 9 to contact the Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) to analyze the duties and responsibilities of the Knox County Sheriff's Office and to research what authority municipalities have to reach agreements for enhanced sheriff coverage.
"I'd like to ask the town administrator to contact MTAS to provide an analysis of the current duties and responsibilities of the Knox County Sheriff's Department," Williams said. He framed the request as a response to residents who have been "pretty vocal" about the need for sheriff coverage and patrols in Farragut.
Several aldermen said residents have repeatedly raised the issue and supported moving forward. "Our residents have been pretty vocal about the need of having sheriff's coverage, patrols in our community for some time now," Alderman McCoy said. Town staff indicated they would contact MTAS and return with guidance: "Yes, sir. We'd be happy to contact MTAS about the questions you just asked," a staff member said.
Board discussion did not include a vote on a specific agreement or change in service; the action was a directive to staff to research and report back. The mayor and board members emphasized the goal of clarifying options for enhanced coverage and understanding the legal authority for municipal agreements with the sheriff.
The board did not set a firm deadline for the MTAS response but signaled that staff should pursue the inquiry promptly and report findings to the board for possible next steps.
