Merrillville commission ratifies eligibility list for 10 candidates, extends conditional offers to three

The Town of Merrillville Police Commission ratified an eligibility list of 10 candidates for police appointments and approved three conditional offers of employment.

Commissioner Rich moved to ratify the eligibility list; the commission approved it by roll-call vote. The commission later moved to extend conditional offers to Daniel Seal, Abiel Chavez and Tony Pixel; that motion also passed on roll call.

At the start of the meeting the chief presented operational statistics: February showed 401 citations, 107 arrests and 3,692 total incidents, including 15 domestic batteries and four items transcribed as “owls” (transcript appears to contain a transcription error; see audit). For March, the department recorded 392 tickets, 108 arrests, 3,941 incidents, 13 domestic batteries and a notable rise in crashes to 83 for the month.

The commission also reminded members of scheduled inspections on May 14 at the community center and set the next regular meeting for May 1, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
