The Oakland County Board of Commissioners agreed to forward a $52,000 request that would fund driveway and parking upgrades and electric service to a gazebo at the Oakland County Pioneer & Historical Society site in Pontiac, intended to support the historical society's ice-cream social and an America250 tie-in.
Commissioner Taylor presented the request and introduced Connor Newton, president of the Oakland County Pioneer & Historical Society, who said the site's mansion, carriage house and outbuildings lack infrastructure to handle a larger crowd. Newton and staff said the two upgrades would allow the site to host music, speakers and larger events; county communications staff and a regional videographer (provided in-kind) will handle promotional materials.
The commissioners discussed event timing (the society's annual ice-cream social on the last weekend in July was named as the target) and how the project would link to downtown Pontiac improvements. The committee voted 7-0 to secure the funding recommendation and the item will go before the full board next Wednesday for final approval.
If approved by the board, the funds would come from the county program budget line identified in the request, not the county sponsorship line. Staff said they will coordinate site planning and a July event timeline with the historical society.
