Port Hueneme seeks sustained advocacy on dredging after mixed federal budgeting signals

City staff provided a status update on the recurring regional dredging project that supplies sand to Port Hueneme beaches. The city manager said dredging cycles aim for roughly 2.2 million cubic yards every two years and reported the most recent cycle (2023) produced about 2.4 million cubic yards; earlier cycles produced 1.9 million (2021) and 1.6 million (2019).

The manager said agencies including the port, Channel Islands Harbor representatives, the U.S. Navy, Army Corps of Engineers and the county are engaged and that early feedback indicated this year's initial budget expectations differ from historical patterns. Staff has issued letters of support to federal and state representatives and is participating in stakeholder planning; the county supervisor's office is hosting a stakeholders meeting and Beacon (local partner) is scheduling a sand-summit.

Council members thanked staff for quickly coordinating multi-agency engagement and reaffirmed dredging as a priority for the next six to 12 months. No formal action was required; council received the update and directed continued advocacy and participation in interagency planning.
