The Colonial Heights School Board approved a proposal to partner with Richard Bland to offer an associate‑degree pathway for high‑school students.
Mr. Nelson presented the proposal, saying the program "would enable a student ... to take college level courses as early as a junior, earn college credits and perhaps graduate with as many as 60 credits even more and earning their Associates while at the same time graduating with a high school diploma." He framed the program as offering both career and college pathways and noted it is not intended for every student but would provide significant opportunity to those who pursue it.
Board discussion covered staffing and credentialing for dual‑enrollment courses and examples of transfer pathways. The district noted dual‑enrollment instructors generally must hold a master’s degree in the subject area to teach college credit courses. Board members praised the program as a potential long‑term benefit for students and a recruiting advantage for families considering the division.
The motion to approve the associate‑degree program was moved, seconded and approved by roll call.
