Chris Olick, representing Save Our Structures, Asbury Park (SOSAP), told the council that SOSAP has joined with the Asbury Park Historical Society and that Preservation New Jersey added the casino building to its list of New Jersey's ten most endangered sites.
Olick said the designation will elevate the site's public profile and "hopefully enable us to have better negotiations with the developer in terms of preserving that very important piece of our architectural and cultural history here in Asbury Park." Council members thanked the group for its work.
Why it matters: The designation by Preservation New Jersey is intended to draw attention and resources to threatened historic sites; here it may strengthen preservation advocates' leverage in discussions with property owners and developers. The council did not take formal action on the casino building during the meeting, but members indicated continued support for preservation efforts.
