Public comment at the March 4 Grand Rapids Public Schools board meeting focused on staffing shortages, student safety and transparency in procurement, with several speakers urging immediate action.
Marlo, who identified themself as president of GRE, told the board, "Tenemos 139 vacantes," and warned that unfilled positions mean students are losing access to one-on-one instruction and that competitive salaries are needed to recruit and retain teachers.
Multiple parents and teachers echoed that message. A teacher described managing a kindergarten class of 26–27 students without assigned support staff and said, "No siento que se me escucha," urging the district for more aides and competitive pay. Parent Lisa Vanen recounted classes taught by virtual teachers and long substitute stretches; she said the arrangement left families without clear contact and called for more permanent staffing.
Safety concerns were raised in a separate public comment. Melissa Ready described two incidents, including a student struck by a car and a separate threat during recess, and said security response was delayed. "En el segundo escenario seguridad tomó aproximadamente 20 minutos para llegar," Ready said; she asked the district for a formal review and clearer protocols.
Speakers also questioned details in the purchase agenda and the planned use of Mystery Science curriculum materials. Teachers and parents asked how a cited $48,000 line item would be used, which teachers would receive physical kits, and whether the academic committee had reviewed alignment with the district's strategic plan. Curriculum staff responded that digital licenses for Mystery Science were purchased with ESSER funds, licenses extend through June 2027, and that physical kit distribution varies by school; staff said the academic committee reviewed the purchase and additional reporting can be provided.
The board considered and approved the purchase agenda. Board member Itman moved the motion; the chair recorded affirmative votes and declared the motion carried. One member expressed reservations about some components but the agenda passed as presented.
The meeting closed with an announcement that the board would move to a closed session to consider a personnel matter (a suspension or complaint) later in the evening.
Next steps requested by public speakers included a district-level response to the safety incidents, a transparent accounting of the purchase-line items (including the $48,000 entry), and a plan to reduce teacher vacancies and improve substitute coverage.
