Radford schools adopt Five Ponds Press social‑studies materials for K–8 at about $130,000

The Radford City School Board on April 8 approved the adoption of Five Ponds Press social‑studies materials for kindergarten through eighth grade, following a presentation by Dr. McDaniel and Miss Price. Teachers who reviewed samples indicated a strong preference for the Five Ponds Press materials.

Miss Price told the board the elementary package (K–8) and requested teacher resources would cost "approximately $130,000," which includes both hard copies and digital access. Secondary school adoptions were held for later because the Virginia Department of Education has not finalized its approved list for secondary social‑studies materials; the board said it will wait for that state list before moving forward for grades 9–12.

During the presentation, staff said they had run a public comment period (Feb. 11–March 10) and received a single submission that addressed secondary materials rather than the elementary selection. Teachers and staff reported being ready to move quickly on secondary purchases once the state list is published.

The motion to approve the K–8 adoption carried by voice vote. Staff will proceed with procurement and return with contract details and delivery/timing information.
