Board members used the April 8 work session to iron out plans for an upcoming retreat and to press the community-engagement committee for concrete outreach ideas.
Members questioned whether the leadership portion of the retreat should be held on a Saturday and whether a different facilitator or split sessions (leadership orientation plus separate finance workshops) would better serve the district’s needs. One board member said previous facilitation left them disappointed and asked the board to require a clear agenda and stated outcomes from any paid facilitator before committing to their services.
The chair asked members to provide blackout dates for June–August and said she would consolidate those into a scheduling request to the facilitator, Mike, who is newly in the superintendent role. Board members suggested separate sessions so the group can both set goals with the new superintendent and run more technical finance workshops at additional meetings.
On community engagement, members discussed being more visibly present at public venues — libraries, farmers markets and similar events — while being mindful of not appearing to campaign. The chair said she will consult with OSBA president Mary Cleveland and share any ideas with the local committee working on engagement.
Next steps: board members to submit unavailable dates, the chair to request facilitator agendas and the community-engagement committee to return concrete outreach proposals for board review.
