The Bradenton City Council on April 8 authorized the purchase of an 11.3‑acre parcel west of Braden Village for $1.35 million to support stormwater retention, a PAD/Police Athletic League pad and a future multi‑use building for youth and workforce programming.
City staff described the parcel as roughly rectangular, bounded by 13th and 17th avenues and adjacent to Rogers Garden Elementary School, and said the site will host stormwater retention required by permitting, parking and a roughly 50,000–60,000 square‑foot multi‑use PAL facility for recreation and community programs. Mr. Perry told council the acquisition required substantial title and easement review; staff said about 95% of encumbrances have been resolved and title insurance is in place.
Staff said the purchase price and closing costs will be covered entirely with external funds provided to the city for acquisition and park development; no general‑fund dollars will be used. “The purchase price is 1.35 million,” Mr. Perry said, noting the complexity of survey, easement removal and closing costs related to the property’s history.
Councilmember Coachman moved to authorize the purchase and to permit the mayor to execute transactional documents; Councilmember Barnaby seconded and the motion passed 5‑0. Councilmembers described the project as a community development opportunity that links youth programming, stormwater compliance and neighborhood revitalization.
Next steps include finalizing closing and beginning permit work tied to stormwater design and coordinated permitting with partners including the school district and park operators.
