Lancaster County commissioners on May 12 voted to amend the county's general assistance guidelines to align the county poverty threshold with the federal poverty rate.
Sarah Hoyle, director of human services, said the change updates Appendix A of the guidelines and "increases the amount that an individual can make by... $26" for a household of one. Hoyle characterized the change as an administrative alignment with federal figures rather than a broader program overhaul.
The board opened and closed a public hearing on the amendment and then adopted the resolution approving the guideline change by roll call. The county clerk’s office will update the formal guidelines and Appendix A to reflect the new threshold.
Why it matters: county general assistance eligibility determines access to locally administered supports for residents not covered by other benefits. This incremental increase affects the allowable income calculation for prospective applicants but does not create a new county program or add an identified funding stream.
Next steps: staff will publish the updated guideline appendix and apply the revised threshold to future case determinations, per the county’s administrative procedure.
