Public commenters urge pre‑trial services funding and ask for action on industrial vapors

Two public speakers used the committee's comment period to press the court on separate issues.

Bryson Austin urged the county to invest in pre‑trial services, saying the county spends "about $90 a day incarcerating people in Washington County" and that a $500,000 investment to hire about eight pre‑trial case managers would free people who cannot afford bail, reduce jail population and save administrative court costs. He cited examples of placements, court appearances and treatment referrals connected to local pre‑trial work.

Kenneth Loveit, who identified himself as a Washington County resident, said he and others are being exposed to vapors he attributes to Eco Vista and said state agencies have not adequately responded. "ADQ is not doing anything," he told the committee, and he asked the court to consider a resolution or other action to escalate the matter to state authorities and to support local investigation.

Committee members acknowledged both comments and the need for further information; several justices asked staff to follow up with more detailed cost estimates for pre‑trial services and to identify the proper agency contacts and investigative avenues for the environmental complaint.
