The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners voted May 5 to approve the Calvert Marine Museum’s 2026–2030 strategic plan, a five‑year roadmap intended to support accreditation and growth. Director Jeff Murray, Deputy Director Michelle Green and Board Chair Gary Wing presented the plan, which sets four strategic goals: make the museum a destination, maximize statewide and regional impact, improve site and building functionality, and ensure future sustainability.
Museum staff said the plan makes no immediate funding requests; potential capital needs would follow the county’s regular budget processes and the museum anticipates pursuing private and grant funding for some initiatives. Key items highlighted include a comprehensive exhibits plan, a paleontology center (building on the state designation as Maryland’s State Paleontology Center), website and restroom upgrades, and a campus master plan to address collections storage and operational needs.
Commissioners praised the museum’s volunteer program and education outreach; the board’s approval will enable the museum to maintain American Alliance of Museums (AAM) accreditation, a credential staff said is important for pursuing grants and donations. The motion to approve the strategic plan passed by voice vote.
Next steps: Museum leadership and the nonprofit society will align fundraising and grant‑seeking with the plan’s objectives; any capital requests will be routed through the county’s capital budget process.
