York School District One presented an instructional technology framework Saturday that begins with guided device exposure in pre-kindergarten, advances through purposeful tool use in elementary grades, and emphasizes content creation and research skills in middle and high school.
Instructional leaders said the district has endorsed three core platforms: Canvas as the learning-management system used for assignments and discussion boards; MasteryConnect to manage assessments and standards-based trackers; and Exact Path (Edmentum) to measure student growth and provide differentiated practice. Staff emphasized that the tools must be paired with teacher-led instruction and an explicit progression of classroom tasks: exposure → purposeful use → creation → transfer.
Presenters showed early impact data indicating students who mastered more skills in Exact Path also registered measurable gains on other assessments such as NWEA MAP. Dr. Brandom said the goal is not device-for-device’s sake but to ensure "intentional design" in classrooms so technology complements — rather than substitutes for — teacher-led guided instruction.
Trustees discussed legislative interest in limiting unstructured device use in younger grades and confirmed the district will continue teaching digital-literacy and keyboarding benchmarks alongside other early-learning skills.
