Sylvania Schools board approves recognitions, consent agenda, personnel actions and agreements; policies postponed

The Sylvania Schools Board of Education on April 27 unanimously approved a slate of recognitions, consent items, personnel actions and a district athletic training agreement, and voted to postpone the second reading of several district policies because board members did not have adequate access to board documents.

Board leadership moved to approve Item 2.1, recognizing South View High School students who achieved high ACT and SAT scores and commending the South View Marching Band for earning a superior rating at the state marching band competition. The motion passed on a roll-call vote with all recorded members voting yes.

The board then cleared a five-item consent agenda (Items 5.1–5.5), which included minutes from March 16 and April 13, the March 31 treasurer’s report (the administration reported revenue up by about $100,000 and expenses within about $10,000 of February forecasts), small purchase orders over $3,000, a workers’ compensation agreement administered through Sedgwick’s group retro program, and an appropriation amendment to reflect additional pass-through grant receipts. A motion to approve the consent agenda passed unanimously.

Administration recommended approval of two overnight student field trips (Item 6.1); that motion also passed unanimously.

On Item 6.2, the board approved an athletic training services agreement with Prometica Central Physicians to provide athletic training at district events through 2027. "This is an agreement that we have entered into in the past at no cost to the district," said Dr. Mley. Board members who had observed the trainers at events described their services as "top notch." The motion to approve the agreement passed on a unanimous roll-call vote.

Board members voted to postpone Item 6.3 (policies on second reading and approval) after the administration explained that some members did not have access to board documents and needed more time to review. The board approved a motion to delay the second reading to the next meeting.

The board approved personnel items placed on consent, including administrative contract renewals, licensed leaves, one-year non-renewals, licensed contract recommendations (Items 7.1–7.7), and classified personnel actions including hires, resignations, termination, personnel changes and a summer position (Items 8.1–8.6). All were adopted by unanimous roll-call votes.

The meeting concluded with a motion to enter executive session for personnel matters; the motion carried unanimously and the board stated no action would follow the executive session.
