East Penn board hears policy updates on Crown Act protections, threat assessment and AI-recording concerns

At its April 27 meeting the East Penn School District board received a first reading of eight policy updates that administration said align the district with recent state law changes and emerging technology concerns.

Dr. Pobolitis summarized the package: updates to Policy 221 (student dress and grooming) and Policy 325 (employee dress and grooming) were revised to reflect the Crown Act’s protections against discrimination for hairstyles and head coverings. Policy 236.1 on threat assessment was updated to reflect new Pennsylvania School Code requirements and to clarify cooperation between threat-assessment teams and police.

On technology, Dr. Pobolitis said Policy 237 (electronic devices) was updated "to reflect necessary changes because of the use of AI glasses and other concerns of students using devices to record videos and take pictures without permission during the school day." Other clarifications covered charter-school transportation responsibilities and district audit procedures.

All eight policies were presented as a first reading; no final votes were taken at this meeting. The board invited feedback during the review period before any second reading or adoption.
