Union seeks firm prior‑day inclement‑weather decisions and emergency‑response pay

The association presented a detailed package of changes to the district’s inclement‑weather and emergency‑response rules.

Association negotiators said the district should make decisions about delays, cancellations and closures by 5:00 p.m. the day before the event so staff and families have reliable notice. “We felt like the district needs to make a decision the night before… so that all of our folks can be safe to make plans for travel or not travel,” an association representative said.

On emergency response, the association proposed an on‑call volunteer list drawn from custodial, maintenance and technology staff; responders would receive double time pay with a minimum two‑hour guarantee for after‑hours emergency work (examples listed: vandalism, pipe or roof leaks, HVAC failure, cyber security incidents, decontamination, facility fire, bus/vehicle emergencies).

For transportation the union asked that drivers be given 60 minutes notice of a delay (instead of the current 30 minutes) because many members live more than 30 minutes from work. The association also asked that evening-shift employees be given at least 60 minutes notice of delays or cancellations and receive double pay for time worked before a delayed start when appropriate.

District representatives listened and said they will review the proposals. No policy change or formal vote took place at the meeting; bargaining will continue.

Next steps: the district will consider the association’s draft language and respond in later bargaining sessions.
