Public commenters press board on a teacher dismissal, Chromebook costs and district messaging

Public comment at the April 22 meeting included emotional appeals and procurement questions.

Sheila Tilhorn, who identified herself in the meeting as a local resident and former substitute, asked for a closed-door review of her recent dismissal and said she is currently blocked from subbing for the district. Tilhorn related her employment history, apologized for prior behavior she described as unprofessional and asked the board to meet with her in closed session to review her case.

Amanda Tanner urged the board to seek more competitive bids for Chromebooks. She said the district cited a $500-per-device estimate during the finance discussion and suggested the district could procure comparable devices for significantly lower prices. “Pull out your little pocket computer thingies. They’re like $250 bucks a piece,” she told the board.

Jenna Lindholm urged the board to scrutinize both spending priorities and the district’s messaging. She said a quoted phrase in district communications — rendered in the meeting as “I play violently” — signals a tone the community should evaluate, and she urged attention to retaining experienced educators rather than treating teachers merely as a budget line.

The board did not take action on public comments during the meeting; the chair reminded speakers that the board does not typically respond during public comment but that staff may follow up as needed.
