Mayor Michael Sutphin urges Blacksburg residents to serve on town boards and committees

Mayor Michael Sutphin recorded a brief message urging Blacksburg residents to consider serving on the town's council-appointed boards and committees. "We're going to take a closer look at how council-appointed boards and committees help shape everyday life in Blacksburg," Sutphin said, stressing the role residents play in local decision-making.

Sutphin said many decisions that affect the community are guided by residents who serve on about 10 boards and committees covering a wide range of topics. He described the Planning Commission as the body that reviews land use proposals, zoning changes and new development plans and that it hosts public hearings to ensure community voices are included.

He also highlighted the Housing and Community Development Advisory Board, which he said focuses on housing programs and policies intended to support affordability and help neighborhoods remain accessible. On transportation and outdoor amenities, Sutphin pointed to the Corridor Committee, which works on expanding and maintaining town trail systems, greenways and bike paths and strengthening connections to surrounding communities.

On parks and recreation policy, he said the Recreation Advisory Board helps guide decisions about parks, recreation programs and community spaces that bring people together. Sutphin closed by inviting residents of varied backgrounds and interests to participate and by directing them to "visit the Town of Blacksburg's website and explore ways to get involved."
