At the same board meeting where residents questioned a $9 million land acquisition, teachers, family members and the Edison Teachers Association conveyed the human cost of recent budget-driven non-renewals.
"My wife, Miss Gabriella Pino, is not just a name on a list — she’s a dedicated teacher...We chose Edison," said Matthew Pino, who told the board his seven-months-pregnant wife received non-renewal notice following the budget vote. Pino described acute family hardship that included medical complications tied to stress and urged three remedies: guaranteed preschool placements for children of affected staff, priority rehiring when vacancies arise, and safeguards against retaliation for employees who speak publicly.
The district’s teachers’ union told the board that roughly 52 staff members were non-renewed after the budget process. Matt Revnack, president of the ETA, described multiple members who received notices and said the cuts had left many educators distraught. "These are real people; these are lives that have been upended," Revnack told the board.
Speakers asked the board to reconsider priorities, noting the timing — teacher appreciation week and nursing appreciation week — and the emotional and financial toll the non-renewals have on families. Commenters described possible loss of health benefits, housing instability, and the effects on classroom supports.
Several commenters urged concrete board actions: guarantee preschool placements for children affected by layoffs, document procedures to prioritize rehiring qualified non-renewed staff when openings arise, and accelerate public communication about staffing decisions and appeals processes. The board did not reverse individual personnel decisions at the meeting; members said they were listening and urged continued dialogue with the administration.
What’s next: Union leaders and affected staff said they will pursue outreach to individual board members and the administration and may seek additional remedies. The board approved personnel reappointments during the meeting; it did not vote to reinstate the non-renewed staff member referenced in public comment.
