Richland County Council proclaims Public Works Week, Small Business Week and Bike Month; honors state champion high‑school basketball teams

Richland County Council used part of its May 5 agenda to issue proclamations and recognize community groups and high‑school athletic champions.

Director Henderson read proclamations declaring May 17–23, 2026 as National Public Works Week in Richland County, May 3–9, 2026 as National Small Business Week, and May 2026 as Bike Month and commending Cola Town Bike Collective for its work expanding access to bicycles and repair services.

Public Works Director Maloney thanked the council and invited members to a May 20 lunch celebration of staff; a representative of the Small Business Administration/SBDC recognized local female‑owned firms, and a Cola Town Bike Collective representative thanked council for the first county proclamation recognizing Bike Month.

The council also presented proclamations honoring Blewood High School girls basketball as 2026 Class 5A state champions and Westwood High School boys basketball as 2026 Class 5A Division 2 state champions. Representatives from both schools thanked the council and highlighted academic success — the Blewood representative mentioned a combined team GPA of 3.8 and eight seniors headed to college; Westwood’s coach said seven seniors are college‑bound and praised the program’s community support.

These items were ceremonial and approved by motion; council then invited those recognized to take photos at the seal.
