The South Middleton policy committee on April 27 recommended that the full board adopt a new Policy 815.1 governing the use of generative artificial intelligence in education and endorse two associated administrative regulations—one for staff and one for students.
At the May 4 meeting Mr. Hall summarized the committee’s review. He said the policy includes definitions of AI literacy, artificial intelligence, generative AI and open-source AI and that the administrative regulations provide classroom guidance and expectations for staff and students. The committee also discussed forming a parent-inclusive group to provide ongoing input to the policy as it evolves.
Mr. Hall reported that the policy was recommended for adoption but did not state that the full board had completed formal adoption at the May 4 meeting; the item appears in the agenda materials as a recommended policy action from the committee. If and when the board schedules a vote on Policy 815.1, standard notice and review procedures will apply.
Committee discussion also flagged the need to align any final policy language with local practice and to provide staff and parent training as part of implementation.
