The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners adopted multiple ceremonial proclamations during its May 4 meeting recognizing local events and awareness months.
The board proclaimed May 1517, 2026 as Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame weekend; Louise McColl presented event plans and inductee Fred Lynch thanked the board. The board also declared May 2026 as National Treatment Court Month; Judge James Faison described the county's drug, veterans and mental health treatment courts and supplied participant counts for the previous year. Officials recognized National Safe Boating Week and the 75th anniversary of the Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron, with a presenter giving statewide boating accident and life-jacket statistics and demonstrating an inflatable life vest. Finally, the board recognized National Bike Month and highlighted local bicycle and trail projects while noting 2024 crash counts involving bicyclists.
All proclamations were adopted by motion and voice vote where recorded. Presenters used the opportunities to encourage life-jacket use, raise awareness of treatment-court services and invite participation in sports and bike-safety events.
