Public Works marks Pine Street paving milestone and reports progress on Waveny elevator

Public Works provided a multi-topic update on May 5 that included project milestones, landscaping and an in-depth status report on the Waveny elevator project.

The department reported that crews completed the town’s long-term paving list with Pine Street and that Park Street and Playhouse parking lots have been repaved and are in active use. Staff described near-term site work including speed-calming options near Town Hall and planned plantings (London plane trees) to screen the new access area.

On the Waveny elevator, project managers shared phased invoicing, explained how engineering and architectural fees have been allocated between elevator and bathroom phases, and described current construction progress: structural ironwork was reported complete, the contractor is installing framing and beginning glass installation at lower levels, and crews are coordinating sequential work inside the shaft. The project team cautioned that public events (a wedding and prom) impose scheduling constraints and are negotiating site access to limit disruption. Staff said a standard one-year construction warranty applies and that the town has also purchased manufacturer warranty coverage for the elevator; maintenance will be handled under the town’s elevator maintenance arrangements after commissioning.

Board members asked that financial summary sheets be made clearer (so phase totals reconcile on one page) and requested a more detailed invoice reconciliation going forward. Staff committed to tighter cost-to-phase reporting and promised to bring a reconciled summary to the board at an upcoming meeting.
