Parents and staff flag ESY transportation and onboarding issues; district describes fixes for summer program

Parents described anxiety about sending students to ESY (Extended School Year), citing early-week transportation problems and the uncertainty of unfamiliar staff. Several parents said the first week often requires patience as routes and staff settle in.

Kendra Wak and other staff outlined steps taken to reduce problems: the district adjusted ESY hours (high school 8–11 a.m.; elementary and middle school 9–12), color-coded buses to keep student assignments consistent, and suggested optional pre-ESY drop-in hours so families and some students can tour sites and meet staff.

"We actually did the hours differently so there's a little more time for routes in between," staff said, and described color-coded buses and small scheduling changes that helped reduce delays. Committee members suggested sending slide decks or photo packets to families with staff pictures and contact information to ease first-day anxiety.

Why it matters: ESY serves many students with disabilities; predictable transportation and familiar staff are essential to family trust. Members recommended pre-program tours, clearer contact lists and a parent-friendly slide that lists class staff and bus information.

Next steps: Staff agreed to add contact information to ESY communications, explore optional drop-in tours before summer, and provide class- or program-level slides and photos for families.
