Oakland, N.J. — At its April 30 meeting the Oakland Board of Education approved a slate of routine and substantive consent items across governance, finance, personnel and policy.
What the board approved
- Annual appointments (7.01–7.29): The board read and approved the slate of annual appointments, including auditor, district physician, architect of record, official bank (Midpen following a merger), custodian of records and multiple safety and compliance officers. The slate was approved on a roll call vote.
- Financial and budget approvals (11.01–11.14): The board approved monthly transfers, the board secretary and treasurer reports, purchase orders, warrants, the final 2026–27 school district budget and the final preschool budget. The board also authorized the continuation in the public employer trust agreement and approved Neutraser (as named in the transcript) as the food service management company for 2026–27 at a flat rate of $18,643 (year two of a potential five‑year agreement).
- Curriculum and personnel (12.01–12.12): The board approved field trips, substitute and tutor listings, the literacy curriculum pilot, leaves of absence, and the 2026–27 administrative and faculty staffing lists. Minutes and roll call indicate the board approved these items; the business office noted the budget adjustments will result in the elimination of one full‑time position for 2026–27.
- Policy readings and community relations (13.05–13.07): The board approved first and second readings of multiple policy revisions (attendance policy, sexual harassment policies for staff, resource and library material updates, nepotism and employment-of-chief‑administrator changes) as listed on the agenda.
- Miscellaneous (14.01–14.02): Board approved HIB (harassment, intimidation and bullying) reports and the review of the official state HIB grades.
How the board voted
Several consent packages were approved on roll call. For key financial items (11.01–11.14) the roll call recorded the following affirmative votes: Miss Dunham, Mr. DeMarco, Mrs. Falpel, Mrs. Marian, Mr. McMillan and Mr. Ty. The meeting transcript records a single 'absent' during roll calls and repeated unanimous approvals for the presented consent packages.
Notes and caveats
- Transcript spelling and names: the food service vendor is recorded in the transcript as "Neutraser"; meeting materials or the district’s procurement records should be consulted for the official vendor name and contract details. Similarly, the secretary/administrator name appears in the transcript inconsistently (Balden/Baldin); the agenda lists Jen Balden in administrative roles.
Next steps
Approved administrative appointments and budgets will be implemented by the business office; staffing actions and contract items will be brought forward to implement the 2026–27 fiscal year plans and personnel assignments.
