Board members raised concerns about increasing deer numbers across Grand Island, recounting multiple sightings and at least one recent vehicle crash attributed to deer. Members described seeing large groups — one member said they counted about 15 to 30 deer in a single sighting — and said winters may not have reduced numbers as expected.
A board member said they have spoken with conservation partners and requested a formal deer count and options from the Department of Environmental and Conservation (DEEC). Possible management approaches discussed included scheduled hunts and bait-and-shoot programs; members noted Grand Island’s size could require multiple management zones and coordination with conservation authorities. The board asked the conservation board to follow up with DEEC and present management options to the Parks Advisory Board.
No decision to implement a specific control method was made during the meeting. Members agreed to pursue data collection and to ask the conservation board to return with counts, recommended approaches and a plan for public engagement and safety protocols.
