Donor gives $10,000 toward new Victoria Opera House sign; council discusses design options

A downtown nonprofit reported a $10,000 donation toward an exterior sign for the Victoria Opera House and presented several design concepts to council.

Steve Cthrell, director of the Baltimore Downtown Restoration Committee and a member of the tree commission, outlined three options ranging from a traditional trapezoid marquee over the front doors to a corner-mounted blade sign with programmable LED panels. He said the donor's gift provides a strong start and that the nonprofit will continue fundraising for a full installation.

"We received a $10,000 gift," Cthrell said, adding that the group would return with revised drawings and more detailed cost estimates. Council members discussed visibility from Main and Market Streets, the benefits of programmable messages for event promotion and maintenance costs for LED versus static letter panels.

Cthrell said the committee would come back with updated concepts that could combine a corner blade with a programmable panel; council members expressed support for a design that makes the venue more visible and helps promote events downtown. The group emphasized that the project would be privately funded through donations and not paid for by general-tax revenues.

The committee said it will present further designs and costings at a future council meeting.
