Balcones Heights — The City Council approved a $10,000 sponsorship April 27 to support Wonder Theatre’s upcoming production of Matilda, a family‑focused musical slated as the organization’s summer show.
Chris Rodriguez, executive and artistic director of Wonder Theatre, said the production will feature 18 youth performers (ages 7–15) and 22 local adult performers and aims to expand family programming and educational outreach. “The show will create opportunities for families and allow us to supply tickets to underserved students,” Rodriguez said.
Council discussed funding sources and staff confirmed the city can allocate up to $10,000 from the economic incentive fund (fund balance cited at roughly $345,420). Councilman Hernandez moved to approve the sponsorship and the motion carried in open session.
Why it matters: Council framed the sponsorship as an economic and community development investment, promoting family entertainment and possible hotel visitation while supporting arts education.
What’s next: Staff will coordinate fund disbursement with Wonder Theatre and return any necessary follow‑up to council.
