Skokie health and family-services commissions present modest, targeted FY27 budgets

The Village Board received briefings from the Board of Health and the Commission on Family Services as part of the FY27 budget hearings.

Dr. Edward L., chair of the Board of Health, outlined an $800 FY27 request to support the board’s advisory work, community-health-plan implementation and volunteer coordination. Dr. Edward L. highlighted accomplishments including the board’s protocol for agenda work items and its volunteer participation at a community flu clinic that assisted in vaccinating more than 1,300 residents.

The Commission on Family Services described three subcommittees for youth and families, seniors, and people with disabilities. Commissioners said their $1,200 budget typically covers publicity, modest event food and supplies for continuing programs including farmers-market donation coordination and a mother’s-day diaper drive. Commissioners also reported planning for a fall 2027 ‘Live Well at AgeWell’ seniors resource fair and exploratory outreach to LGBTQ community stakeholders.

Trustees praised volunteer contributions and discussed opportunities for commission collaboration, including the fine-arts commission’s grant to Orchard Village and potential cross-program partnerships in the coming year. Both commissions reported flat or modest budgets and emphasized leveraging partnerships and volunteers to stretch limited funds.
