No public comment as Northumberland County hears school FY27 budget; board will delay action

The Northumberland County Board of Supervisors opened a public hearing April 23 on the Northumberland County School Board’s proposed fiscal year 2027 budget and heard a brief presentation from school staff on the request; no members of the public signed up to speak.

A school-system representative explained that the local portion of the school request decreased versus last year (transcript reported the decrease as "$244,95" and the total as "$21,621,45"; those figures appeared in the record with unclear numeric punctuation). The request includes a 2% salary proposal, a 4.5% insurance coverage adjustment, funds to refresh technology and costs for contracts that had been excluded from prior budgets but remained payable.

The chair opened the floor for public comment; Mr. B (staff) confirmed there were no signups and there were no online speakers. The chair then closed the public hearing noting the board would not take action that night because county code requires a seven-day waiting period before action on a school budget request.

Why it matters: the school budget sets staffing and capital priorities for local schools. Board and school staff questions during the meeting focused on timing for CIP deposits for an elementary playground and on whether reimbursements requested by the school would cover playground costs without new local tax dollars.

The board will consider final action in a subsequent meeting after the statutory waiting period.
