An agency official said the FBI was rapidly deployed to the scene of a recent incident and has taken charge of evidence processing, including examination of a long gun and shell casings. The official said investigators are conducting witness interviews and asked anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
The official credited an interagency response involving the Department of Homeland Security and the Metropolitan Police Department and said the FBI’s Evidence Response Unit is examining all ballistics recovered from the scene. "We are conducting witness interviews as we speak," the official said. "No piece of information is too small. No piece of information is inadequate. We will evaluate it all." The official also said the FBI team on scene was coordinating with the mayor and the head of the FBI field division.
Investigators said they have begun examining the individual's background to determine whether the person was a "lone wolf actor" or if others were involved, and that evidence will be analyzed immediately as part of efforts to safeguard the public. The official repeated that anyone present at the scene who has information should come forward to law enforcement, the FBI, or the Metropolitan Police Department.
The official closed by thanking national leaders and department partners for their support, saying, "Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, thank you for your leadership. Attorney General and Homeland Secretary Mullin, thank you for your partnership in law enforcement." No names of victims or a suspect were provided during the statement, and no charges or arrests were announced. The FBI urged members of the public with tips to call 1-800-CALL-FBI so investigators can evaluate every lead.
