Board approves Huntington North Green Team tree nursery MOU with city partnership

The Huntington County Community Schools board voted April 27 to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Huntington North High School Green Team to operate a school-run tree nursery in partnership with the city of Huntington.

Presenter Mr. Park told the board the project has city funding and that Tom Guggenheim provided initial materials. He said the seedlings originate from the state nursery and "part of the agreement when you purchase from the state is that you can’t resell them," adding that the plan is to provide trees for city parks, city properties and right-of-way plantings.

Mr. Park said students would benefit from hands-on learning and the district would welcome questions as the MOU is implemented. A motion to approve the MOU was made on the floor and the board carried it unanimously (6–0).

The board’s approval authorizes staff to finalize operational details with the city. Superintendent Brimberry said staff would coordinate next steps; the MOU documentation and logistics will be handled by curriculum and operations staff. The district noted that donors and city funds cover project startup costs, and the alumni/volunteer involvement is intended to keep ongoing cost to the district low.

What comes next: staff will finalize detailed operating procedures, state-nursery compliance steps and planting schedules and will report progress to the board.
