CJR senior credits Level Up work program with job at EyeRecycle and growing independence

Anthony Mabe, a senior at CJR, said the Level Up work-based learning program helped him find hands-on training that led to a job at EyeRecycle and improved his confidence and independence.

Mabe said the enrollment process was quick and program staff were supportive, allowing students to access a range of opportunities. "I want to do something hands-on," he said, describing the placement that matched his preference for active work. "It makes me feel like I can be independent."

The transcript records that Level Up offers multiple opportunities, including a virtual reality simulated work experience; a referral from BRS for VR goggles preceded a later summer, hands-on placement. According to the transcript, that placement led to employment at EyeRecycle, which Mabe said boosted his spirits and sense of purpose.

Mabe encouraged school counselors to connect students with disabilities or students who have 504 plans to the BRS Level Up program so they can access outside agencies and work-based learning. He also said he plans to continue his education at Porter and Chester in Waterbury, Connecticut, studying HVAC, and hopes to start a business with his brother.
