The Colorado Senate on May 12 set aside floor business to honor Sen. Julie Gonzales, who is leaving the chamber after eight years. Majority Leader Angelina Rodriguez presented Gonzales with a crystal and a flag and led a sequence of personal‑privilege remarks that highlighted Gonzales’s work on immigration, criminal justice and labor issues.
Colleagues from across the aisle described Gonzales as a force in Denver organizing and a persistent presence on criminal‑justice policy. "I have known Senator Gonzales since long before we ever met because she has been a force in Denver in politics and organizing and labor stuff," Majority Leader Angelina Rodriguez said on the floor. Several senators recalled working with Gonzales in the House and Senate on bills to expand access to professional licensure and other measures.
In brief remarks from the well, Gonzales thanked family, aides and staffers and reflected on legislative service. "I want to thank my husband, Ben," she said, adding tributes to the community organizations and staff who supported her work. The Senate recessed briefly so members could greet her at the well; the body returned to order and continued consideration of its calendar.
